UNICEF: One million Afghan children face life-threatening malnutrition

The UN children's agency UNICEF said Tuesday that one million children in Afghanistan are suffering from life-threatening malnutrition in a worsening crisis. Across the country, 3.7 million children suffer from wasting, meaning they are acutely malnourished, according to UNICEF.
Among that total, "one million children are suffering from life-threatening severe acute malnutrition" — the worst form, said Tajudeen Oyewale, UNICEF's Afghanistan country representative. Speaking to reporters in Geneva via video link from Kabul, he warned, "If there is no treatment, and we are not able to act fast, that one million number are at risk of dying."
Afghanistan has experienced repeated hunger crises in recent decades amid civil war and other challenges. UNICEF's latest warning highlights the deteriorating situation for children in the country.
