US cancels joint marine drills with South Korea over Iran war constraints

South Korea announced on Monday that the United States had cancelled the biennial Ssangyong joint marine drills scheduled for next month, due to constraints on force availability caused by the ongoing war with Iran. The Ssangyong exercises involve marine forces from both countries and are designed to strengthen combined operations, typically featuring warships, aircraft, and ground forces rehearsing amphibious landings.
The cancellation comes after U.S. President Donald Trump last week ordered the separate annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises to be cut from 11 days to five. Trump cited the high cost of the drills and said they sent an "inappropriate and hostile" signal to North Korea, while highlighting his relationship with its leader.
