A U.S. Department of Defense inspector general report to Congress says the war in Iran has caused strategic ammunition shortfalls and exposed munitions resupply bottlenecks. It estimated Operation Epic Fury cost $33.4 billion from Feb. 28 to June 30, including $22.3 billion in expended munitions, and listed aircraft and drone losses.
The U.S. Department of Defense inspector general reported on Monday, September 14, 2026, that the United States faces a shortfall in ammunition as a result of its war in Iran. In a first-of-its-kind mandatory report to Congress, the inspector said Operation Epic Fury (OEF) had an estimated cost of $33.4 billion between February 28 and June 30. Of that, $22.3 billion was spent on expended munitions alone. The report stated that munitions expenditure on OEF resulted in strategic inventory shortfalls and revealed industrial base bottlenecks for munitions resupply. It also listed losses to the American fleet: four F-15s destroyed, one F-35 damaged, seven KC-135 tanker aircraft damaged and up to 30 MQ-9 Reaper drones destroyed.
